It’s that time again – our quarterly review of the latest trends influencing interior decorating. We hope that you found use in our suggestions for spring. But if you’ve been waiting until the hottest season to redecorate your living spaces, you’ve certainly chosen a good time. This summer is chock-full of interesting new ways to beautify your home, and we’re excited to share with you the top trends that have caught our eye.
As usual, the hottest trends are taking pointers from the season itself, and many designers predict interior design to bring the warm, breezy attitude of summer indoors. After a long winter, many Canadians will want to take advantage of the hot and humid days by setting aside time for a trip to the cottage, to a national park, or even an evening on a rooftop patio. When they can’t experience the great outdoors on their own, they bring a little bit of the outside in with them. It’s also is a nice reminder that it’s not always sub-zero temperatures and snow!
Expect to see a rise in natural materials as designers attempt to reflect Mother Nature’s summertime fecundity. Wood and faux-wood blinds, woven fabrics, grass-weaves, linen, and bamboo treatments are incredibly popular at the moment. Pair it with sheer drapery to give dimension to the warm breezes that are coming through your open windows.
Lush and vibrant plants are a season’s must, but you can forget about potting them in the typical planters. 2016 is all about hanging plants. Knotted string hanging planters are especially on point, and you can combine the rustic lines of rope with eye-catching white ceramic pots. We suggest planting succulents, which seem to have won over the heart of GTA in the past few months.
In terms of paint – forget about eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss. Mattes are in. They afford any room a soft, rich look that’s both inviting and sophisticated at the same time. For those with young children or rowdy pets, you’ll be happy to learn that it’s an incredibly durable, forgiving finish. While sun may reflect off of finishes like semi-gloss and expose your wall’s imperfections, matte paint will mask these blemishes. Its non-reflective surface also creates a beautiful contrast to copper or stainless steel appliances and fixtures.
When choosing which colour to paint your walls, find inspiration in the flowers of your garden. Bright and bold accents are the way to go, complemented by tried and true neutrals. These mellow beiges and whites ground your space, so it isn’t overwhelmed with too much colour. This rule is a good idea to copy with your window treatments. We recommend the blinds, shutters, and shades are neutral in colour, as these are timeless, classic styles you won’t have to update at the change of every season. Instead, use sheers and drapes to add a pop of vibrant colour to your windows.
