For whatever reason, people tend to think about (and invest much more time and energy into) the furniture, carpeting, flooring, and walls of their homes than they do their window treatments. Often windows are the last aspect of the home that receives a dressing-up, renovation, or customization. How often have you seen a family move into a new place, only to deal with curtains, blinds, and shades last? We’ve seen people leave their windows bare, without even a simple lace curtain, for months after moving in—giving the street a great view of their private lives! On the other hand, people bring their old, ill-fitting and poorly suited shades and blinds to a new home, not understanding that the old treatments simply don’t match.
Regardless of what causes this phenomenon, our window treatment experts are happy to help inject some life into the design conversation, giving you three exciting new ideas to help you realize that windows are a huge part of your home’s appeal—or they could be, if you arrange them properly!
1. Go Organic. With bamboo and real wood, you’ll be taking the great outdoors into “home sweet home.” Made from reeds, grasses, and other organic materials, a classic woven wood or raw-looking bamboo blind or shade can perfectly complement an area of the home that’s already dressed to invoke a feeling of natural serenity. Set up free-standing plants, trees, stalks, or a beach-comber’s walking stick, shells, clams, and other outdoorsy effects to really let your windows bring your all-natural theme come to life. Surrounding earth tones—yellows, tans, reds, oranges, greys, tans, and so forth—will make this set-up even more attractive.
2. Bring to Focus. Using the principles of art and design, you can choose a combination of shutter, blind, shade, and curtain on a larger set of windows to bring viewers’ attention to, and thus focus upon, a section of your home—or a furniture arrangement—that deserves notice. Choose a subdued tone that matches your room’s colour scheme, and keep the actual coverings as basic as possible. Use curtains to frame the scene and bring attention to a sitting area, table and chairs, or other arrangement.
3. Go with the Flow. With angled or curved windows—or peculiarly shaped windows in general—people often opt for the simplest covering, concealing a unique shape with horizontal or vertical blinds, shutters, or a basic shade. But why obscure an original window shape? With plantation shutters, you can customize how the blades are arranged to meet your needs. When you install a Z frame, you can have the shutter blades follow a curve, making fan-like designs. If windows have dramatic angles, triangular peaks, or other irregular set-ups, you want to accentuate the appeal, not diminish it!
